"SUICIDE SQUAD'S" DELEVINGNE SLAMS SUPERHERO FILMS FOR BEING SEXIST
"Suicide Squad" actor Cara Delevingne has something to say about how women are portrayed in superhero films, and she's not pulling punches. The Hollywood Reporter has zeroed in on a quote from Delevingne's interview with Empire in which the actor, who will play Enchantress in the upcoming David Ayer-directed Warner Bros. superhero film, takes the genre to task.
“There are only three girls in ['Suicide Squad'] but in my opinion they have the best roles,” said Delevingne. “Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist. Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute.”
Delevingne speaks truth when it comes to the "Suicide Squad's" better-than-most gender ratio; the only cast photo released to-date features one woman to every three men, which is better than the ratios presented in Marvel Studios' team films. "Avengers" featured one woman to five men and "Guardians of the Galaxy" had one to four...which, yes, that last radio includes a male-presenting raccoon and tree. In addition to Delevingne's Enchantress, "Squad" features Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Karen Fukuhara as Katana as well Viola Davis as the non-superpowered Amanda Waller.
Delevingne's comments about female superhero attire is a little head-scratching, though. While there are plenty of problems with female representation both in films and especially on movie merchandising, the accusation that they are "normally naked or in bikinis" seems a bit baseless. Even though Marvel sticks to a heavily skewed gender ratio and tends to put women heroes in impractical high heels and wedge boots as a default, their characters never wear bikinis; Black Widow, Peggy Carter, Maria Hill, Sif, Gamora and pretty much every other heroine in that universe always go into battle wearing pants.
We've yet to see what Enchantress will be wearing in "Suicide Squad." We have seen plenty of pics of the film's version of Harley Quinn, who shows a bit more skin than many -- or all -- of her Marvel counterparts.
Delevingne's Enchantress will leap into action alongside the other women of "Suicide Squad" when it arrives on August 5, 2016.
