The project served as Steiner’s film school graduation film and began during his time as a Fulbright Scholar at the San Francisco Art Institute. It premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year and had a North American bow at Hot Docs in April. Oscilloscope plans to take the film out theatrically before heading to digital and other ancillary platforms. “Above and Below” takes place on the margins of American society, following different figures who live off the grid including a couple scraping by in the depths of the flood channels located beneath Las Vegas and a man living in a reclaimed military bunker in the middle of the dusty California desert. O-Scope’s topper, Dan Berger, said, “We’re really excited for our collaboration with Nicolas and for the ability to bring ‘Above and Below’ to audiences. It’s truly unlike anything I’ve seen before and shines a bright light on the weird, wonderful world surrounding us that we so frequently overlook.” The film was produced by Helge Albers, Brigitte Hofer and Cornelia Seitler.
