AMC Gives Straight-To-Series Order To Clyde Phillips Drama ‘Broke’
AMC is continuing its push in straight-to-series orders with a pickup of Broke (working title), from former Dexter and Nurse Jackie showrunner Clyde Phillips. AMC Studios and Lionsgate, where Phillips is under an overall deal, will co-produce. The project, which Phillips will executive produce, has received a 10-episode order for a 2016 premiere.
Broke joins three other straight-to-series orders handed by AMC in the past year or so, Into the Badlands, Humans and The Night Manager, as the network has been looking to diversify its development model. The network recently selected three drama scripts, Goliath, The Son, and Lodge 49, to set up writers rooms and work on scripts and outlines with an eye toward straight-to-series orders.
Like Humans, Broke is based on an European format. An adaptation of the Danish series Bankerot created by Kim Fupz Aakeson and produced by DR Broadcasting, Broke is a drama about two best friends who take one last shot at their dream of opening a restaurant together. One is a brilliant chef in trouble with the Mob and the law, and the other is the best sommelier in the city who is the widowed father of a teenage son. Broke is the story of friendship, fatherhood, grief, larceny, arson, drugs, adultery, murder, love – and blazingly original cooking.
“Clyde Phillips is a supremely talented creator we’ve known and admired for years,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “Through his work on Dexter and Nurse Jackie, Clyde has repeatedly demonstrated his skill for crafting complex, flawed, yet irresistible characters, and we’re looking forward to him bringing his continued brilliance to Broke.’ We’re also so happy to be partnering once again with our good friends at Lionsgate after the extraordinary journey we shared on Mad Men.”
This is Lionsgate TV’s first series for AMC since the studio help put the network on the original map with Mad Men, which just finished its run.
“We have had the great fortune to work with both Clyde Phillips and AMC for many years and we’re delighted the stars have aligned to bring us together on Broke,” said Kevin Beggs, Chairman, Lionsgate Television Group.
Phillips called Broke “unique, edgy and sexy”. “I can’t wait to jump in and help it evolve into a groundbreaking bit of television,” he said.
Broke will be produced by AMC Studios and Lionsgate in association with Clyde Phillips Productions. Executive producers are Phillips, Henrik Ruben Genz (Bankerot,), Malene Blenkov (Bankerot) and Piv Bernth, who produced the adaptation of another Danish drama for AMC, The Killing. Here is a trailer for Bankerot (sorry, no subtitles)
