'Ant-Man' TV Spot Showcases Iron Man, Thor and More Heroes Not Actually In 'Ant-Man'
It's a move designed to place the character in the same league as the earlier hits.
With a little over a month to go before Marvel's Ant-Man hits theaters, the latest TV spot for the Paul Rudd vehicle wants to remind the audience of one simple thing: This movie comes from the same studio that made all those other superhero movies you love.
Against the tagline "The Marvel Universe is about to get a lot bigger," the 30-second spot features shots of Captain America's shield, Iron Man about to use his repulsor rays, Thor walking into shot with hammer in hand, the Hulk yelling and Rocket Raccoon and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy — all to tee up a sequence where Rudd's Scott Lang uses the Pym Particle-powered Ant-Man suit to shrink down for the first time.
It's a move designed to place the character in the same league as the earlier hits — something emphasized even more with Rudd's last line of dialogue from the spot: "Saving the world — you know how that is." Well, no, we don't; but those other guys at the start of the trailer? They sure do. (This is also the first time that the scope of Ant-Man's mission is revealed; he definitely didn't seem to be saving the world in earlier trailers.)
Whether this spot trails a deeper involvement with the Marvel Universe for the movie remains to be seen— Rudd is rumored to be making an appearance in next year's Captain America: Civil War, which might mean there's an Avengers cameo at some point in his debut. For now, the important thing is reminding people that the studio responsible for this movie knows what it's doing when it comes to this kind of thing.
Ant-Man opens July 17. Watch the TV spot.
