deadline.com/2015/05/cohen-media-group-acquires-mustang-cannes-1201430918/Cohen Media Group Rides With Directors’ Fortnight Drama ‘Mustang’ – Cannes Mustang, a drama about sexual repression by Turkish-French helmer Deniz Gamze Ergüven, has been picking up strong reviews here off of its debut in Directors’ Fortnight. It’s the first feature by the filmmaker and has now been acquired by Cohen Media Group for North America. CMG is eyeing a theatrical release in early 2016. The film was previously picked up for the UK by Curzon Artificial Eye. It’s sold by Grégoire Melin’s Kinology. Set in modern-day Turkey, Mustang focuses on five orphaned sisters who live with their grandmother, an aunt and an abusive uncle. After they are witnessed innocently frolicking in the surf with some boys, the girls are held as virtual prisoners in their home until the youngest sister engineers an escape — which turns out to be just a brief respite from their increasingly oppressive new existence. CMG’s last year acquired Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu which went on to an Oscar nomination and $1.1M in U.S. box office.
