Spotify Adds Video To Its Playlists As Competition Intensifies
Add Spotify to the fast-growing list of digital services taking advantage of the boom in online video as it faces growing competition — including from from Jay Z’s new Tidal music provider and Apple’s widely anticipated entry built on Beats Music.
The No. 1 subscription music streaming service said today that it will begin to offer news and entertainment clips from ABC, BBC, Comedy Central, Condé Nast Entertainment, ESPN, Fusion, Maker Studios, NBCUniversal, TED, Turner Broadcasting and Vice News. Users will be able to watch clips from shows including Conan, Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Show with Seth Meyers, E! News, and The Grace Helbig Show.
Spotify’s Now service will be available today to iPhone users in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden. Other markets and platforms will be added “in the near future.”
“We want Spotify to help soundtrack your life by offering an even wider world of entertainment with an awesome mix of the best music, podcasts and video delivered to you throughout your day,” the company says in a blog post.
About 15 million people globally pay around $10 a month for Spotify’s subscription services. Some 45 million use its free service, which has advertising and limits on how many songs listeners can skip.
But the service has been widely attacked: Taylor Swift pulled her catalog, saying that Spotify pays too little for music rights. Record companies including Sony and Universal say that the free service undermines sales, although Warner Music says it helps to make listeners aware of new or different performers.
Turner Broadcasting says that it’s “vital that we make our content available to consumers on as many platforms as possible. This deal reflects yet another opportunity to distribute Turner’s award-winning and highly popular programming to new audiences through a high-profile delivery channel, providing both additional exposure and more consumption of our global portfolio of leading brands.”
