Sharon Draper’s ‘Out of My Mind’ YA Novel Set for Movie Adaptation
EveryWhere Studios and the Gotham Group (“The Maze Runner”) are teaming to produce a movie based on Sharon Draper’s inspirational young adult novel “Out of My Mind.”
The story centers on the journey of a young girl, wheelchair-bound and unable to communicate because of cerebral palsy, to discover her true potential. Draper’s book was recently named one of Time magazine’s “100 most influential young adult novels of all time” and has sold more than 1.5 million copies.
The protagonist cannot walk or talk but can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She also refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy.
The production has partnered with children’s health charity Starlight Children’s Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg and Peter Samuelson, to be a strategic adviser and promotional partner on the project. “The story’s main character is authentic, candid and compelling and reminds us of the quiet strength, fortitude and gifts of every child living with a chronic condition, and their vital role as members of our families, schools and global community,” said Jacquie Hart, Starlight Global CEO.
Producers are Dan Angel, EveryWhere Studios CEO Tom Mazza, Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lindsay Williams, and Brian Gott, Starlight’s chairman.
Goldsmith-Vein is a producer on the upcoming “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.” Gott is the former publisher of Variety.
