Here, he adapted The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon, by Washington Post reporter Monte Reel. The film is based on a compelling true story: It’s estimated that more than 40 undiscovered indigenous tribes make their home in the Brazilian Amazon. The constitution says that if there’s even one surviving Indian, the surrounding land becomes a preserve that cannot be exploited commercially. When one such Indian was discovered in 1996, big money interests tried to kill him, while a small group tried to save him. Pic is being mounted as an indie. It’s produced by Chockstone’s Steve Schwartz, Ed Saxon, Paula Mae Schwartz, Hypnotic’s Doug Liman and Dave Bartis. Mark Bailey is an executive producer; Roger Schwartz is a co-producer. Haggis is repped by CAA and IPG.
