The CW Orders Comedy Series ‘Significant Mother’ For Summer
The CW is continuing its strategy of using its digital studio CW Seed as incubator for comedy series that make the leap to TV. The latest effort to come out of that is Significant Mother, which the CW has ordered to series for this coming summer.
The CW, whose lineup is dominated by hourlong shows, has used summer to experiment with original half-hour comedy. It had success with the reboot of improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, though scripted comedy has been tougher to crack. The two new entries introduced last summer, Backpackers, which also originated at CW Seed, and Canadian import Seed, did not go beyond one season.
Like last year, the CW is mixing a homegrown comedy developed by its digital studio and an imported one, the U.K.’s Dates.
Written by Erin Cardillo & Richard Keith, Significant Mother stars Josh Zuckerman (90210), Krista Allen, Jonathan Silverman, Emma Fitzpatrick and Jay Ali. Alloy is producing with Warner Bros. TV and CBS TV Studios.
Zuckerman plays Nate, a budding Portland restaurateur whose world is turned upside down when he comes back from a business trip to find his lothario best friend and roommate, Jimmy, is dating his recently separated mother, Lydia (Allen). To make matters worse, Nate’s previously disinterested dad, Harrison (Silverman), is determined to win Lydia back and isn’t afraid to use Nate to get what he wants. Stuck between his family feud and his best friend’s first serious relationship, Nate’s “new normal” forever changes his relationships with his parents and severely handicaps his own dating life.
