Marvel is keeping the pipeline flowing in features and on TV, traditional and online. Since making its primetime debut as a Disney brand in 2013 with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel has introduced a new ABC series every season, most recently Agent Carter this midseason, along with a massive four-series package at Netflix, which kicks off tomorrow with Daredevil.
Marvel and ABC now are quietly prepping another series, a S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, for next season. I hear the project, first reported by EW, would feature cast members from the mothership series, with the talent deals currently being worked out. That is the strategy used for the Arrow-Flash spinoff series, now in the works at the CW, also for next season.
Noone would comment but I hear the Marvel spinoff was developed by S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and co-executive producer Paul Zbyszewski, who are currently writing the script and would executive produce. ABC is not expected to make a formal greenlight call on the project until the script comes in, with the hope being to be able to do that before the upfronts. In that case, the network might announce the new series at its upfront presentation, along with a promo. In the spinoff goes to series, I hear Zbyszewski is expected to serve as showrunner.
Details on the offshoot’s plot are sketchy, but I hear it could air concurrently with S.H.I.E.L.D. The question is whether, following the decision to put Once Upon A Time and Once Upon A Time In Wonderland on the schedule at the same time, something ABC brass later officially regretted as likely hurting the spinoff — the network would do that again with S.H.I.E.L.D. Using the spinoff as a bridge between the fall and spring portions of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was the original plan for the two Once series, would make more sense.
It is unclear how the S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff would impact the renewal chances of Agent Carter, which has been on the bubble.
