Chopflix describes both deals as “major” and says that M-Line will supply it with 140 titles. Funimation will supply it with 12 features, including classics “Akira” and “Ghost in the Shell.” Headed by veteran distributor Milt Barlow, Chopflix plans to operate as a stand-alone transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) platform, as well as launching a dedicated channel on Vimeo On Demand. Launch is set for mid-year. The target audience is Asians living in North America, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and South Africa – estimated to number 30 million — along with Western fans of Asian movies and arthouse audiences. Chopflix is owned by Los Angeles-based Asia Releasing, which handles North American releases of Chinese and Asian films. Barlow says the company has already acquired more than 600 features from across the pan-Asian region and some 400 hours of episodic TV. Other content partners include Distribution Workshop, Ablaze Image, Golden Scene, KRU Studios, Digital Media Rights, Magnum Dream Australia, China Lion Australia and Vendetta Films.
