Paramount and Skydance Productions will open the fifth Mission: Impossible movie on Dec. 25, 2015. Tom Cruise will return to the role of Ethan Hunt. The movie re-teams the actor with Christopher McQuarrie, who directed him in 2012's Jack Reacher. The script for the fifth edition in the franchise comes from Drew Pearce, with Cruise's Tom Cruise Productions, Paramount and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot producing. The 2015 year-end holiday is already jammed with high-profile tentpoles, led by Star Wars: Episode VII (Dec. 18). Inferno, the next installment in Sony's Dan Brown series, is set likewise set to open Dec. 18, along with Legendary and Universal's Warcraft. Set to open on Dec. 25 opposite Mission are Kung Fu Panda 3 and Live By Night. David Ellison's Skydance is co-financing Mission 5. In December 2011, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol reinvigorated the franchise, grossing a massive $694.7 million worldwide. Attachments:

www.deadline.com/2014/07/mission-impossible-5-female-lead-goes-to-rebecca-ferguson/Swedish up-and-comer Rebecca Ferguson, who got a Golden Globe nom for her English-language debut in the title role of BBC’s The White Queen, has been set to play the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 5 for Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and Bad Robot. This comes after Deadline revealed that Alec Baldwin is in talks to play the head of the CIA in the film, which Chris McQuarrie will direct with shooting to begin in August. This was a coveted role. Ferguson was raised in Sweden and became established in London. The actress, who next will be seen in the Brett Ratner-directed Hercules, is repped by Charlies Collier at Tavistock Wood and Actors in Scandinavia. I would imagine there might be a Hollywood agency or five courting her after they read this. Cruise, who’ll reprise his role as Ethan Hunt, is producing with J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk, and David Ellison, Dana Goldberg & Don Granger exec producing the fifth installment of a franchise that has grossed north of $2 billion worldwide. The last film, Ghost Protocol, was the largest-grossing film in Cruise’s long star career. He’s coming off Edge Of Tomorrow, the summer film that is building towards $400 million globally. I saw this movie over the vacation and found it so surprising that it reminded me a lot of Pacific Rim last summer. Both films had strong mythologies and were carefully crafted films that seemed to get discounted by their projected budgets. Pac Rim locked in a sequel with Guillermo del Toro directing, and based on how well Edge Of Tomorrow has hung in, I wouldn’t be surprised to see sequel talk start on that one. Considering how much audiences complain about Hollywood regurgitation of remakes and sequels, it is surprising that this film didn’t get more acclaim. It’s certainly original IP, which is a challenge to market, but certainly a satisfying summer movie experience with a strong plot to go with the obligatory attacking aliens.

www.deadline.com/2014/07/alec-baldwin-circles-mi5-football-concussions-and-a-rob-ford-type-mayor-also-in-the-offing/Alec Baldwin has two killer movie projects lined up, along with a possible TV successor to his Emmy-winning turn in 30 Rock. He’s in talks to star in Mission: Impossible 5, playing the head of the CIA. He’s also in talks to join Will Smith in the Peter Landesman-directed movie about football concussions at Sony Pictures. Here’s the capper, though: Baldwin is developing a new TV show with NBC Productions, in which he would play the central character, a Rob Ford-type Mayor of New York City. Ford is the buffoonish Toronto, Ontario mayor who has had his troubles with the crack pipe and behaves outlandishly on a fairly regular basis. That should be edgy stuff, since it is being fashioned as a one-hour cable series. Wells Tower is writing the pilot, and Baldwin will exec producer with Cary Brokaw. Baldwin teamed with James Toback on the hilarious Cannes documentary Seduced And Abandoned. He turned down numerous roles to stay close to home while his wife was pregnant, but is starring in the untitled Warren Beatty project on Howard Hughes (he also starred in Martin Scorsese’s movie about the renowned billionaire recluse), and stars in the upcoming Cameron Crowe-directed untitled film. He has generated headlines for his clashes with paparazzi and recently announced in New York magazine that he was through with public life. I wish he wouldn’t take the bait, but his penchant for rising to the occasion does somehow make that TV series seem pretty promising. Baldwin is repped by CAA.
