Fight Pass Announcement from UFC Chief Content Officer Marshall Zelaznik
Lots of new content will be on Fight Pass. A number of MMA Promotions. Included will be Pancrase, Cage Rage, UCMMA, Extreme Challenge, Hook N Shoot, XFO, TKO, and KOTC.
Pancrase is generally considered the first modern Mixed Martial Arts promotion. Founded in 1993, the Japanese based organization was predominantly shoot matches, though there were often fixed fights when the promotion felt it was right for business. Many of the biggest stars in MMA fought in Pancrase. The early iterations of the promotion featured: Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten, Masakatsu Funaki, Guy Mezger, and Minoru Suzuki.
Extreme Challenge was one of the earliest “independent” Mixed Martial Arts promotions in the United States. Based primarily out of Iowa, it was the early home to stars such as Matt Hughes, Pat Miletich, Shonie Carter, and Jeremy Horn.
King of the Cage has been a longtime independent MMA promotion, initially originating from Southern California. It has since branched out but its early SoCal roots remain its trademark. UFC veterans such as Dean Lister, Joe Stevenson, and Diego Sanchez all made their mark in KOTC. The most notable alum of recent note is Rory MacDonald.
Hook N Shoot was another Midwest based independent promotion. With most of its events coming from Indiana, Hook N Shoot may best be known today as one of the earliest US based adopters of women’s MMA.
Cage Rage was a London-based promotion throughout the early aughts. UFC veteran Michael Bisping appeared on two Cage Rage cards early in his career. Later, the promotion would feature many well-known MMA names, such as: Anderson Silva, Ninja Rua, Paul Daley, Matt Lindland, Vitor Belfort, and of course the legendary Tom KONG Watson. UCMMA is the successor promotion to Cage Rage.
TKO was Canada’s largest MMA promotion. It’s most famous veteran is Georges St. Pierre, but the company also featured Urijah Faber, Sam Stout, and Mark Hominick, amongst others.
XFO is a Chicago-based independent MMA organization. Notable alum include Jeff Curran, Bart Palaszewski, Clay Guida, and Pat Curran, with the latter two owing their early career starts to the promotion. Former Bellator Featherweight Champion Daniel Strauss was also an early member of the XFO, as was UFC veteran Eric Schafer.
