Has Warner Bros. found their Aquaman director?
That's the scuttlebutt around Hollywood and inside the offices of competiting studio Sony Pictures Entertainment , according to reports. The Daily Beast is reporting on the latest batch of information released by the now infamous Sony Hack, including an email from Columbia Pictures' co-president of production Michael De Luca to Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Although Daily Beast fails to quote the email directly, the outlet's William Boot says that De Luca tells Pascal that Jeff Nichols, director of the recent film Mud, has been chosen to direct 2018's Aquaman. Neither Warner Bros., DC Entertainment, or Jeff Nichols have responded to this report.
In October, Warner Bros. announced the Aquaman film for 2018 as part of their larger DC Superhero film slate, with Jason Momoa signed on to play the lead role. Momoa will debut as Aquaman in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which recently completed filming. Warner Bros. has hired screenwriters Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad to work on the script. Although Nichols' helming of Aquaman is unverifed at this point, he is currently working on the 2015 film Midnight Special starring Man of Steel's Michael Shannon and Star Wars: A Force Awakens Adam Driver. The film, set for release next November, is being done in partnership with Warner Bros. as well.
Although neither Sony or Columbia, a subsidary, are involved with Warner Bros.' superhero film franchises, it's easily within the realm of possibility that higher-ups at various studios would know about director's commitments to upcoming projects. Incidentally, Sony worked with Nichols on the 2011 film Take Me Shelter.
This un-verified report is the latest in a string of news to come out of the recent hack on Sony by a mysterious group dubbed "Guardians of Peace." Their hack, and the resulting leaking of documents they've found, have revealed insider details on varous movie and television projects, as well as relationships between top-level Sony management and various politicians, directors and actors.
