AFM: Dean Devlin on ‘Go With Me,’ ‘Leverage’ and Passion
Dean Devlin says it’s all about passion, explaining why he’s gotten back into the independent financing/foreign sales business through his 13-year-old Electric Entertainment banner.
Electric came on board recently to co-finance with Enderby Entertainment the Anthony Hopkins’ action-drama “Go With Me,” with Julia Stiles and Ray Liotta on board. Electric Entertainment will be selling international rights at AFM. Shooting starts in mid-November in British Columbia, Canada, centering on a young woman newly returned to her hometown in a Pacific Northwest logging community who’s harassed by a crime lord.
“We just fell in love with ‘Go With Me,’ ” Devlin says. “We don’t have investors so Electric is a very passion-based company. I’ve done well by following my passions.”
Devlin — whose producing credits include “Independence Day” — is in middle of shooting “Geostorm,” starring Gerard Butler, for Warner Bros. in his directorial debut. “It’s like night and day to work on a studio movie so I’m blessed to work at both ends of the system,” he notes.
Devlin says his work on exec producing a pair of TNT series — “Leverage” and the upcoming “Librarians” with Rebecca Romijn for has been invaluable of “Geostorm.”
“We’ve been working on these groundbreaking technologies in TV such as using a file-based workflow and Red cameras so we don’t to wait for the footage,” he adds. “I am such a tech geek. There’s such a resistance to change and we are being allowed to do that on ‘Geostorm.’”
Devlin, who helped start Voltage Entertainment with Nic Chartier in 2005, believes that such innovations from the independents will help keep the movie business viable.
Electric unveiled the division, its financing of “The Wannabe” and the hiring of veteran execs Sonia Mehandjiyska and Ari Haas last year during the Toronto Film Festival. In addition to selling “Go With Me,” Electric is showing first footage of family drama “Before I Disappear” from Shawn Christensen.
Mehandjiyska said initial response has been strong on both titles. “People know Dean’s name and they want to be in business with him.”
