Sega has provided the first look at its animated “Sonic Boom” series that will re-introduce its popular Sonic the Hedgehog character to young TV viewers on Cartoon Network in November — the same month the company launches the franchise’s latest videogame.
The fast-running blue hedgehog will star in the gaming franchise’s first CG-animated series that will help launch new Sonic games on Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS platforms and a line of merchandise, overseen by toy partner Tomy.
Sonic the Hedgehog was first introduced in 1991 and became an icon for Sega, with the character selling over 140 million games across various platforms.
The series is made up of 11-minute episodes co-produced by Sega of America and OuiDo! Prods.
Videogame vets Roger Craig Smith (“Batman: Arkham Origins”), Travis Willingham (“Infamous: First Light”), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (“South Park: The Stick of Truth”), Cindy Robinson (“Dynasty Warriors 8″), Mike Pollock (“Pokémon”), and Nika Futterman (“Kid Icarus: Uprising”) are providing the character voices.
The actors will also voice the characters in the new Sonic game that hits retailers Nov. 11.
The Nov. 8 premiere on Cartoon Network in the U.S. will be followed by France’s Canal J on Nov. 19, and Gulli in spring 2015. The Middle East will also begin airing the show in the spring with other territories to follow in fall 2015.
The series focuses on Sonic and his friends Tails, Knuckles, Amy and newcomer Sticks, and their never-ending search for adventure, and their battles with Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman.
Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir and Jane McGregor serve as executive producers, on behalf of Sega, with Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog from OuiDo!. Bill Freiberger is co-executive Producer.
Lagardère Entertainment Rights is handling distribution, with Lagardère Active TV Licensing and New Business overseeing licensing and merchandise in France.
