Jon Stewart’s ‘Rosewater’ Sold in U.K., Australia
Sierra/Affinity has sold distribution rights to Jon Stewart’s “Rosewater” in the U.K. to The Works UK Distribution and in Australia to Transmission Films.
The deals come six weeks after “Rosewater” premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. Open Road acquired U.S. rights at Cannes in May and plans to open the drama on Nov. 14.
The film stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Kim Bodnia, Dimitri Leonidas and Shohreh Aghdashloo. It’s produced by OddLot Entertainment founder Gigi Pritzker, Scott Rudin, and Jon Stewart, with Lila Yacoub, Eli Bush and Chris McShane serving as executive producers.
OddLot Entertainment financed the project, which was adapted by Stewart from the memoir “Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival” by BBC journalist Maziar Bahari.
The Works UK Distribution will hold the film’s European premiere in the UK on Sunday at the BFI London Film Festival and will release the film in March. Transmission Films will release the film in Australia in January.
The film tells the true story of Tehran-born Maziar Bahari, a 42-year-old broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship, who was arrested by the Revolutionary Guard police in Iran whilst attempting to cover the 2009 presidential election.
A man identifying himself as “Rosewater” tortured Bahari over 118 days while his pregnant fiancee campaigned for his release. Stewart and “The Daily Show” covered Bahari’s saga and Bahari appeared on the show once he was released from prison.
