variety.com/2014/film/news/george-sluizer-dead-the-vanishing-director-1201311017/Dutch director George Sluizer died Saturday in Amsterdam after a long battle with an illness, Dutch media reported on Monday. He was 82. “Sluizer had been ill for a long time,” Dutch public broadcaster the NOS said, quoting relatives. “In 2007, he barely survived a ruptured artery and after that his health remained fragile.” The director’s Hollywood breakthrough, after working in Dutch for decades, came in 1993 with “The Vanishing,” featuring Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland. It was a remake of a film he had made in Dutch, also called “The Vanishing,” that had been released in 1988. He’s also known for helming “Dark Blood,” starring River Phoenix, who died of drug-induced heart failure at the time the movie was filmed. Sluizer continued working on the film, which eventually premiered in the Dutch city of Utrecht in 2012. According to the Nos, he had been working on several other films and documentary projects at the time of his death.
