DES MOINES, Iowa —Wizard World Comic Con has announced its 2015 convention schedule, and thousands who crave comic books and sci-fi will be in Des Moines next June.
From the comic book reader to the comic book seller, the reaction is the same.
“I think it’s a really good opportunity for Des Moines,” said Katie Manchester, assistant store manager of Mayhem Comics in Clive.
“The fact that Wizard World thought that we were the right place at the right time says a lot about the growing community here in Des Moines,” she said.
The comic book community in the metro area will grow temporarily by an estimated 15,000 people from all over the country June 12–14, 2015.
“You think about 15,000 people in town for a weekend, and it’s got to be in the multiple-millions of dollars,” said Greg Edwards of the Des Moines Convention and Visitors’ Bureau.
A site team for Wizard World came to town on Monday, looking at the Iowa Events Center, where the convention will be held. The team also looked at hotels and potential hot spots like Zombie Burger in the East Village.
“When the hordes of fans hit the city, we are going to be ready for them,” said Chris Diebel of Zombie Burger.
Protocol prevents spokespeople from Wizard World Comic Con from saying anything about the event this early. But when it comes to having a three-day convention devoted to comic books, gaming, movies, pop culture and a whole lot more, the people of Des Moines are excited.
“I believe we’re the best, and this is just one more example to the world taking notice of how cool Des Moines is,” Diebel said.
Celebrity William Shatner, aka Captain Kirk, has already to committed to appear at the convention in Des Moines.
