Dwayne Johnson has stated that he will play a role in an upcoming Warner Bros. and DC Comics movie about the superhero Shazam, according to the Associated Press.
However, the question of which role he will play is still up for debate. During a news conference in Mexico City to promote “Hercules,” Johnson told AP that he has not decided whether to portray hero Shazam or his enemy, Black Adam. He added that his favorite DC Comics character is Black Adam.
“I am putting my heart and soul and my bones into this role,” Johnson said.
Warner Bros. had no comment about the AP report and Johnson’s reps did not return requests for comment. However, Johnson dropped a couple of hints last month about the film.
“There’s a character out there that we’re gonna announce very soon that I’m gonna play, and I’ll just say this — it’s the power of Superman,” Johnson told Total Film magazine. “This character has the power of Superman, he can throw down — just say the word, that’s all I’m gonna say.”
A few days later, Johnson tweeted a drawing of Shazam, Black Adam and Superman.
The studio has not confirmed whether there will be a stand-alone Shazam movie or whether the character will appear in one of the other planned DC adaptations.
On Aug. 6, Warner Bros. set the dates for nine superhero movies based on DC characters. The first film will be “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” out March 25, 2016.
The Shazam character originated in 1939 in a story about a boy named Billy Batson who acquires the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury by saying the word “Shazam.”
